  • Diabetično stopalo = The diabetic foot
    Urbančič-Rovan, Vilma
Gangrene and limb loss are frequent complications of diabetes mellitus. 40-70%of non-traumatic lower limb amputations are performed on diabetic patients who represent only 4-7% of the general ... population. The most importantfactors in the etiopathogenesis of the diabetic foot include neuropathy, ischemia and infection. Ulcer treatment can be either conservativeor surgical and includes wound debridement, control of ischemia and infection, wound dressing, bed rest and pressure relief. New therapeutic modalities, such as platelet derived growth factor, semi-synthetic hyaluronic acid ester, granulocyte colony stimulating factor, Dermagraft and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, seem promising. Beside wound treatment, strategies towards amputation rate reduction must include preventative measures and early detection of patients at risk. This can only be achieved by wide spread network of out-patient clinics. International consensus on the diabetic foot was published in 1999 and translated into Slovenian language in 2001. It includes basic guidelines for early detection, proper treatment and effective prevention of diabetic foot syndrome.
