    Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are used for variety of industrial applications where the constant output power operation and wide speed range is desirable. In order to extend the speed ... range of PMSM, the magnetic field, due to the permanent magnets, is at the increase of speed weakened by phase advance of stator current to exert a demagnetising component of armature reaction field. The output power capability of PMSMs at higher speed is strongly limited by the increase of iron loss. This loss acts to reduce the output power capability drops to zero. Therefore the need for accurate prediction of iron loss in the design stage arises. The thesis describes the calculation of a steady state PMSM characteristics by postprocessing the static magnetic field calculation results by 2D Finite Element Method (2D FEM). With the intention to verify the proposed calculation approach the measurements of load conditions over a wide speed range were carried out on the flux weakened synchronous motor with embedded permanent magnets. The PMSM characteristics were determined by Power Balance Method. For iron loss determination the iron loss model was used. The coefficients of iron loss model were obtained from iron loss measurement and iron loss separation of used electrical steel under alternating and circular flux conditions. Formulations of histerisis, eddy current and excess losses in electrical steels with alternating, circular and elliptical rotating fluxes are derived and used for iron loss calculation together with the information on local flux density variation in the motor components, obtained by the 2D FEM. The necessary input data for the numerical calculation of electromagnetic field of the tested motor were obtained from the measurement results of load conditions in range of speed 3000-10000rpm. Calculation results of a steady state characteristics of the tested PMSM, compared with measured results of load conditions, confirm the validity of the proposed calculation approach.
