This dissertation puts forward a proposal for an interculturality concept and a concept of a differentiated notion of foreignness, which can be used by an interculturally focused literature in ... research and teachings according to the interculturally claimed competences. In this context, interculturality is not seen as a method for describing cultural differences and sameness but - according to the opinion of the German phenomenologist Bernhard Waldenfels - as a way to think and to act. It is based on the criticism of already established interculturality concepts of the kind that have predominantly beendeveloped within the context of intercultural hermeneutics/German studies.Furthermore, the dissertation analyses the prevailing concept of foreignness, thus impending a complex reflection of the foreign. This dissertation, however, uses the classification model developed by Waldenfels which classifies the foreign by degrees of comparison (everyday, structural, radical otherness) as a foil for working with literary texts, assuming that literature plays a pivotal role in the interculturality discourse, because it reflects the foreign as different comparative forms of comprehensibility, in which it noticeably radicalizes, which is illustrated by means of some German literary texts. Based on the analysis of existing approaches in the field of intercultural literature/hermeneutics and on Bernhard Waldenfels' phenomenological approach as well as following more recent hermeneutical approaches (Paul Ricoeur, Uwe Japp), radical constructivism (S. J. Schmidt), the literary theory of the Russian formalists and the deconstruction, a modrl is developed which, firstly, provides for dealing with the foreign in a way that excludes its elimination or appropriation, secondly, fully accounts for the plenty facets of the foreign and, thirdly, takes into account the double character of literary texts, their social and autonomous nature. The dissertation attacks, in particular, the instrumentalization of literary textsmostly for geography and history related purposes, as it is the common practice within the framework of the presented models. In contrast, it will beshown how the foreign can be discussed without diverting the respective textfrom its intended use for geography and history related purposes. Furthermore, it will show a possible method of how the radical other can be approached in literary texts. In this connection, it is assumed that literature is a possible other new way of speaking which diverges from institutionalized discourses and is insofar an intercultural phenomenon provided that interculturality is understood as a way to think and to act generating new creative answers due to its confrontaiton with the foreign. This dissertation is situated in a socially effective study of literature and its imparting and regards itself as ethically justified by the rejection of claims to power and discrimination, the making aware of social processes and the generation of a critical and productive way of thinking. In this connection, literature is seen as a social system of action facilitating a newway to see as a response to the foreign, which helps by its specifics resulting from its diverse foreignness as a social system to develop and to support a number of competences, which are becoming increasingly important when dealing with the foreign. This includes paying attention to the foreign, sustaining the foreign as well as differences in general, a creative and critical way of thinking as well as orientation and action competences.
