    Sočan, Maja ; Vidmar, Ludvik
211 adult patients hospitalised in the Department for Infectious Diseases in Ljubljana with community/acquired pneumonia were studied prospectively to determine the microbial etiology of pneumonia in ... the period between April 1996and the March 1997. Blood culture was positive in 23 patients.Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most frequently isolated bacteria. Chlamydia pneumoniae pneumonia was confirmed serologically in 18% of the patients. Antibodies confirming acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella, Chlamydia psittaci and Coxiella burnetii infection were found in a lower number of patients. Acute viral infection was confirmed in 51 (24%) patients, influenza A virus was most frequently identified. Viral serological tests and tests used to diagnose legionellosis were compared and their sensitivity and specificity studied. Discriminant analysis was used to identify those variables which are correlated with typical bacterial pneumonia caused by Chamydia pneumoniae.
