Slovenian paediatricians were made aware of the IHS criteria for classification of headache early after their introduction. They were applied in an epidemiological study on headache in 904 school ... children aged 7, 11, and14 years in schoolchildren of the Ljubljana Vic commune. Headache has been known to 88% of respondents, in nearly one fifth as a repeating headache once to three times a month. 34,2% have been absent from school due to headache, 14,4% for several days in a year. Only 18,1% have consulted their doctor aboutheadache. According to the Vahlquist criteria 13% of children have migraine, 11,4% boys and 14,7% girls. When using modified IHS criteria the study identified 4,6% of children with migraine without aura - at age 7 years:in 2,1% girls, 1,3% boys; at age 11: in 4,4% girls, 2% boys; at age 14: in 4% girls, 3,4% boys. Migraine with aura - at age 7: in 1,4% girls, no boys;at age 11: in 3,8% girls, 2% boys; at age 14: in 2% girls, 0,7% boys The authors present various classification systems of paediatric headache in the past, and discuss open questions in their use. Public health computer-supported statistic data collection based on ICD has been in use for some years, good coverage of whole Slovenia since 2000 allowing analysis of problems on the national and on the health district levels. The data shows that the major workload ("first visits in the year due to headache") has been at the primary nonhospital (7.729 visits) and secondary nonhospital (3.404) level. The total number of hospital admissions due to headache was 621. Important differences have been found between districts regarding the number of hospital admissions and proportions of various diagnostic categories, for reasons not evident from available data.
