Inducirani sputum pri astmi : magistrsko deloKopač, Matjaž, 1974-Background. Asthma is characterized by bronchial hyperreactivity, specific inflammation of the bronchi and circadian variability. We can study the bronchial inflammation in asthmatic patients with ... cytological and immunological analysis of induced sputum. Differential cytology reveals the presence and type of airway inflammation. Studies of bronchial inflammation can be helpful in the diagnostics and evaluation of treatment of asthma. Subjects and methods. I studied concentrations and proportions of different inflammatory cells and concentration of ECP in induced sputum of 34 patients with asthma and 11 healthy subjects (control group). We obtained the samples with standardized procedure of inhalation of 4.5% NaCl solution and then counted the cells in Neubauer comora and calculated proportions of eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes and macrophages. We determined the concentration of ECP with immunofluorescent method. Results. In the group of patients with asthma the proportion of eosinophils was significantly higher (16.4 +/- 18.7%, average +/- standard deviation) than in the control group of healthy subjects (1.1 +/- 1.1%, p < 0.05). Proportions of other cells did not differ significantly: neutrophils 50.0 +/- 22.6% in the group of asthmatic patients and 48.8 +/- 26.9% in the group of healthy subjects, lymphocytes 1.1 +/- 8.2% vs. 9.6 +/- 6.2% and macrophages 28.0 +/- 21.5% vs. 39.2 +/- 26.0%. Concentration of ECP in induced sputum and in serum was significantly higher in asthmatic patients (123.2 +/- 76.3 micro g/l in sputum and 14.7 +/- 7.8 micro g/l in serum) than in healthy subjects (13.6 +/- 6.8 micro g/l in sputumand 8.2 +/-3.1 micro g/l in serum).
