  • Remedial works in the Karavanke tunnel
    Petkovšek, Borut ; Ločniškar, Andrej
The 7,8 km long Karavanke highway tunnel, connecting Slovenia and Austria, wasconstructed by NATM under extremely difficult geological conditions. The constructor was faced with the problems of large ... deformations of the surrounding rock, water inrushes and the presence of methane. Two years after construction, uplifting deformation of the road surface was observed in the sector of a tectonic contact between C,P clay schist and T1 carbonates, suturated with water. Remedial works became necessary in a tunnel section, 100 m long. The paper provides on overview of tunnel and rock investigation, design and execution of remedial works, together with geotechnical measurements as the main control over tunnel stability along all remedial steps
