  • Model of parent's perception of their children capability for safe traffic behavior
    Polič, Marko, 1946- ...
Accidents of all kinds, especially traffic ones, are threatening children at any moment. Parents are often not aware of their capabilities, and overestimate their ability to join the traffic ... independently (Sandels, 1970; Polič et al., 1996). Valsiner and Lightfoot (1987), discuss socioecological approach in stressed the importance of integrating populational and personal knowledge with information about children's current actions in caregiver's reasoning about prevention. The coordination of this information leads to particular preventive actions regarding children. Hart and Iltus (1988), who developed their "safety management system" for children, mentioned, that the degree to which parents rely on particular prevention strategy, depends on the perceived stage of the child development. In this research we try to establish causal model of parents beliefs about their children capabilities regarding traffic. Parents of children in critical years(older kindergarten children and lower primary school pupils) were questioned about different aspects of their children safety behavior, about family situation, geographical situation in the neighborhood, traffic conditions and demography (e. g. age, education, gender) as well as about their willingness to let their children join traffic independently. With the help of LISREL, causal relationship between variables were analysed. Results are presented and discussed in the frame of current theories. Importance of the results for traffic education is considered as well
