Ionic liquids (IL) have gained huge attention as lubricant additives due to their high polarity, thermal stability, and negligible volatility. We investigated an adsorption mechanism of tributylmethylphosphonium dimethylphosphate IL on tungsten-doped DLC (WDLC) undoped hydrogenated DLC (hDLC) coatings. A range of advanced analytical tools is used to analyze the adsorbed film, including in-situ neutron reflectometry (NR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time of flight secondary ion spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS). The NR investigation revealed a 0.75 nm thick adsorbed layer and it consists of anions formed on the tungsten-doped WDLC surface. However, a 2.7 nm-thick adsorbed layer was found on the hDLC surface which has an entirely different chemical composition. The AFM and ToF-SIMS data revealed that the adsorbed film forms a unique heterogeneous pattern that represents reactive sites for interaction between WDLC and IL, which has not yet been reported. On the contrary, the hDLC surface does not show such heterogeneous patterns and the comparatively adsorbed film has weekly adhered to the surface.
