  • Slovenes beyond Slovenia, in Europe and overseas
    Klemenčič, Matjaž, 1955-
The Slovenes represent one of the smallest "nations" in the contemporary world. According to some estimates, the number of ethnic Slovenes worldwide isca. 2.25 million. Most of them, ca. 1.63 ... million, live in todayćs Republic of Slovenia. Slovenes today live also as an autochthonous population in their ethnic territories, which in addition to the above mentioned Republic of Slovenia, comprise the neighboring frontier regions in Italy (in Friuli-Venetia Giulia), Austria (in southern Carinthia and some areas in Styria), Hungary (in Porabje in southwestern Vas county), and in the same frontier areas on the Croatian side of the Slovene-Croatian border. They live also as emigrants in different countries in the world. Most of them live in the US, Canada, Australia, Argentina and Western Europe. In this chapter the forms of their organizations, political movements and cultural activities are discussed.
