  • Damping identification with finite integration method similar to the continuous wavelet transform [Elektronski vir]

    In the last decade the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) based damping identification methods showed as one of the best methods to analyze the damping of multi-degree of freedom systems. The CWT ... methods have proven to be resistant to noise and can identify damping at closely-spaced natural frequencies. However, with the CWT based techniques the CWT needs to be obtained on a two dimensional time-frequency grid and are therefore computationally demanding. Furthermore, the CWT is exposed to the edge-effect which causes a non-valid identification at the start and the end of the time-series. The edge-effect is hard to control and the damping identification usually requires manual selection of appropriate time-window for the damping identification. This study researches the use of the finite integral similar to the CWT for the identification of damping. Instead of obtaining the CWT at two dimensional grid, the finite integral needs to be calculated at one time-frequency point, only. Using two different integration parameters the damping ratio can be identified. This study discusses some details of the mathematical background of the new method. The presented numerical experiments show that the new method has similar performance as the CWT based damping identification methods while the method is numerically much less demanding, completely avoids the edge-effect and the procedure is straight-forward to use.
