  • Optimal design of warehouse with unequally sized storage compartments

    Automated warehouses are widely used in numerous manufacturing enterprises and logistics distribution centers word wide. Many authors have studied the design of warehouses with the rack of equally ... sized storage compartments. However, they are inadequate and inefficient in meeting the various sizes of customers in today's business word. In the last ICTS conference in 2005 [3], the optimisation process of designing automated warehouses and internal transport was discussed. In this paper, further work on the topic of optimising the storage rack volume is presented. The model of designing the storage rack structure with unequally sized storage compartments is presented.On the basis of the concept of the uniform transport unit loads, automated warehouses have the storage rack of equally sized storage compartments. In the case of unequal unit loads a higher utilization and flexibility can be achieved by using automated warehouses with the storage rack structures with unequally sized storage compartments. The model of designing a storage rack system, whereby a large spectrum of geometrically different transport unit loads is taken into consideration, is developed. With this model a higher utilization of the warehouse volume can be achieved in comparison with the existing models for storage racks with equally sized storage compartments. However the model could be a very useful alternative for designing the warehouse for transport unit loads of different sizes.
