In the study entitled "Hormonal and metabolic aspects of bone ageing", normal bone mineral density (BMD) values were determined for varioous age groups for the Slovene female population. Women with ... advanced osteoporosis (N = 45) were treated with nasal calcitonin in s dose of 100 and 200 IU daily. The effect oftherapy was found to be unrelated to the dosage. The epidemiologic study entitled "Diabetes" included additional analysis of chronic complications of diabetes as well as causes of death in diabetisc in Slovenia. The authors studied th erole of education in the therapy of diabetics patients. The studied form of instruction proved very suitable for insulin-dependent diabetics and somewhat less suitable for other diabetic patients. An investigation of the cause of failure of oral therapy in diabetics was initiated, A reduced percent of binding, to red cells insulin receptors was esstablished, as well as a decreased cleatance rate of metabolised glucose. The authors cocluded that failure of oral therapy is mostly likely due to a combined damage of the pancreatic beta cells and peripheral insulin resistance, especially at the postreceptor level. The indices of fibrinolitic activity in diabetics were studied. The responseof PAI-1 to a carbohydrate meal in obese healthy volunteers was evaluated. Patients with type II diabetesshowed a rise in PAI-1 and a decrease in fibrinolitic activity after the institution of insulin therapy. BMD in patients with type II diabetes was found to be decreased in comparison with healthy female volunteers. (Abstract truncated at 2000 chatacters.)
