  • Numerical simulation of two dimensional profile bending using the torque superposed spatial bending method
Hudovernik, Matej, inženir strojništva, 1977- ...
New methods for tube and profile bending are in constant process of development due to high demands for the realization of cost effective light weight construction, reduction of energy, and material ... consumption. Processes for 3D bending of tubes and profiles made from high strength steels, offer a great potential for development in the field of forming technologies and lightweight construction. The innovative kinematic Torque Superposed Spatial -TSS - bending method, developed at the IUL - Institute of Forming Technology and Lightweight Construction, Technische Universität Dortmund - represents an economical, competitive, and robust technological solution, capable of flexible, continuous, adaptive 2D and 3D bending of profiles with symmetrical and asymmetrical cross-sections. Cold forming new high-strength steel grades, is very challenging considering different technological aspects. Therefore, computer aided numerical simulations are essential for better understanding occurring forming mechanisms of profile bending and any further engineering development. In this paper, numerical investigations of the 2D bending processusing the TSS bending method are introduced. Deform 3D software was used for the FEM simulations. An elastic-plastic numerical model for bending square profiles with variable bending radii, using solid elements and high-strength steel material characteristics, is presented. The numerical results are compared to experimental data and are analysed in detail.
