    Background. In a pilot study we evaluated contrast-enhanced ultrasound voidingcystogram (USVC) for detecting vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in renal transplant recipients using radionuclide voiding ... cystography (RVC) as a reference method. Methods. 23 renal transplant recipients, graft functioning from 10 months to 10 years with recurrent urinary tract infection were investigated simultaneously by RVC and USVC. The empty bladder was filled withnormal saline (mean 250+-30 ml) and 30 45 mBqTc labelled colloid. At the end of filling up the bladder, 19.5 ml of contrast-enhancing agent was instilled. The distribution of radiotracer was continuously recorded by gamma camera and the presence of microbubbles in the uribary tract by ultrasound scanner. VUR grading was that proposed for RVC (I-III). Results. VUR was detected by RVC in 16 (69.6%) and by USVC in 14 (60.9%) out of 23 recipients. Overall sensitivity and specificity of USVC was 75% and 71 % respectively. Theaccuracy of this procedure increased with higher grades of VUR, sensi tivity being 100%) in detecting VUR III grade. Conclusion. We consider contrast-enhanced USVC is in experienced hands a screen ing method and reliable in detecting high grade VUR.
