  • Oak and beech local chronologies in Slovenia : some new results on teleconnection and heteroconnection
    Čufar, Katarina ...
In some parts of Slovenia historic constructions were often made of oak (Quercus robur L., pedunculate oak or Q. petraea Liebl., sessile oak) or beech (Fagus sylvatica) wood. Due to lack of adequate ... reference chronologies it is still difficult to dendrochronologically date them. After one decade of research at the Department of Wood Science and Technology we only have several up to 150 years long local chronologies of oak. They are based on trees only because we have not managed to prolong them with chronologies of historic wood. Among main obstacles for development of a longer regional oak chronology seem to be lack of old trees, great variability of tree ring patterns among trees from the same site and poor teleconnection. The beech has until recently not been sufficiently investigated, nor have been explored the possibilities to heteroconnect oak with beech. In the recent period we collected more samples of oak and beech wood and constructed new chronologies for localities where dendrochronological dating is a problem. The objective of our presentation is to show the main results related to new chronologies. The preliminary results indicate that there exists greater similarity among tree-ring chronologies of beech from different locations than among oak chronologies. It seems to be possible to teleconnect beech chronologies from Slovenia with those of neighbouring countries. In some cases it is possible to heteroconnect beech and oak chronologies from different locations in our region. We also found out that it might be possible to teleconnect oak chronologies from some locations in Slovenia with oak chronologies from some distant sites. We present how the quality of chronologies affects statistical parameters of matching. These results give hope for future progress in constructing regional oak and beech chronologies and for increased likelihood and quality of dendrochronological dating in the region.
