    Mesoporous materials (mesoporous refers to diameter of pore between 2 and 50 nm according to IUPAC classification) with ordered and well-defined porosity are a group of interesting materials: ability ... to tune their pore diameter and pore volumes, as well as morphology, make them potentially usable for applications in various fields, such as sensing [1-3]. Desired properties can be tuned by variations of the synthesis parameters, such as choice of precursor, the type of the structure directing agent (surfactants and polymers), pH and temperature of reaction mixtures, addition of swelling agents, etc. [1] as well as additional covalent or non-covalent functionalization with different groups. In our research work various mesoporous materials, mainly silica-based with hexagonal-oriented and radially-oriented pore channels, were synthesized, post-synthetically functionalized, characterized and tested as colorimetric sensors or indicators responsive for specific analytes. One example is the mesoporous-based system developed to be potentially used as a colorimetric indicator for relative humidity [1]. This system is based on dye dissolution in condensed water in pore channels of selectively-functionalized mesoporous host SiO2 material. We have shown the relationship of pore diameters of the mesoporous host and the value of relative humidity when complete capillary condensation occurred. The materials with pore diameters of 3.0 nm, 3.5 nm and 7.0 nm have gradual colour change when reaching relative humidity of 55, 79 and 88 %, respectively. Conversely, selective methylation of the material with 7.0 nm pore diameter exhibits non-gradual – cut-off colour change, a promising property for the on-off colorimetric indicators of relative humidity [1].
