  • Apoptosis and proliferation in epithelial hyperplasia and squamous cell carcioma of the pharynx and oral cavity
    Jeruc, Jera ...
Recent studies have demonstrated that balance between cell proliferation and cell loss might play a vital role in carcinogenesis. We therefore analyzed theproliferative activity using anti-Ki-67 ... antibody and spontaneous apoptosis evaluated by TUNEL method, in 36 oral and pharyngeal biopsies with increasing grades of epithelial hyperplasia (EH) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In EH, scarce TUNEL positive cells were observed in atypical hyperplasia; positive reaction was also found in parakeratotic cells in all cases of EH with parakeratosis. The percentage of Ki-67 positive cell progressively increased with the degree of EH. In SCC, the percentage of Ki-67 positive cellincreased, while the percentage of TUNEL positive cells tended to decreasewith the grade of SCC. Our preliminary study suggests an inverse relationship between the proliferative activity and apoptosis with increasing grade of SCC and is in accordance with the hypothesis that tumor growth and progression is based on the disarranged balance between cell proliferation andcell loss.
