We studied ... complications following 1164 rubber band ligations of internal hemorrhoids in the period of one year. Results. Seventeen patients (1.5%) suffered from minor or major complications. Eleven patients (0.9%) developed pelvic cellulitis, two patients (0.2%) had severe pain in the wound after spontaneous removal of a necrotic hemorrhoid, two patients (0.2%) had massive bleeding, one patients (0.1%) developed urinary retention and one (0.1%) developed thrombosis of external hemorrhoids. Conclusions. According to our experience we strongly recommend the use of profilactic therapy with metronidazol. Every patient receive written informations about possible complications (high temperature, fever, bleeding). All patients with pelvic cellulitis were successfuly treated with klindamicin. Only one patient with massive bleeding required hospitalization and blood transfusion.
