    Data on births of children are registered in the Perinatal Information System of the Republic of Slovenia (PIS RS). All - children bom in Slovenia from 1 January to 31 December are registered in PIS ... RS. These data are checked and adjusted with data provided by the Central Population Register, Deaths Database, and the Information System on Foetal Deaths. Data on foetal deaths (induced abortions, spontaneous abortions, extrauterine pregnancies, other foetal deaths) in a calendar year are registered in the Information System on Foetal Deaths (ISFS). In the chapter all live births are presented, regardlessof child's birth weight, and all stillbirths with a birth weight of 500g or more (for multiple births irrespective of gestational age or birth weight), regardless of the place of birth. Specific health indicators of perinatal and neonatal mortality are presented. The number of births are presented in separate tables by region, gender, birth order, age and marital status of the mother. The data on live births, induced abortions, fertility and Induced abortion rates are presented by region. In this chapter we also present data on deaths of residents of the Republic of Slovenia from 1 Januaryto 31 December 1999. As in 1997 and 1998 the underlying causes of deathare coded according to the instructions given in the 10th revision of theInternational Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems for statistical purposes (ICD-10). Following ICD-10, external causes of morbidity and mortality can now be coded not only for injuries and poisonings, as in the previous revisions, but also for diseases and morbid. conditions. Since deaths in 1999 were coded according to the ICD-10 recommendations, external causes of mortality were assigned to 182 codes of underlying cause of death. This explains why there are fewer deaths presented in Chapter XIX than in Chapter XX. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
