  • Water evaporite effects on stable isotopes in the salt pans of Sečovlje (Slovenia) : presented at IV. Isotope Workshop, Portorož, 1998
    Pezdič, Jože ...
Seawater at diffrent stages of evaporation was analyzed to evaluate the oxygen and hydrogen isotope fractionation effects in salt pans of Sečovlje (Portorož, Slovenia). With increasing evaporation ... calcium carbonate crystallized first followe by calcium sulphate as gypsum, while halite is crystallized at the end of evaporation. The oxygen isotope composition of sea water in the Bay of Piran (Gulf of Trieste) is +0.8%o, while in river Dragonja and average rainwater it is in between -6 to -7%o. Evaporation isotope effect in the first step enriches the sea water with [root] 18 O to [delta] [root] 18 O = +4.2%o, in second to +5.3%o, in third to +6.2%o and in the last +7.9%o. During the crystalization stage a decrease in [root] 18 O is observed from [delta] [root] 18 O of +7.9 to +5.3%o. This change can be atributted to a water - rock isotope exchange, the precipitation of sulphates and carbonates, as well as to biogeochemically active "petola". Data of [root] 18 O and D follow the regression line [delta] D=3.5* [delta] [root] 18 O - 7.7.
