  • A new alignment technique for optical 3D gear metrology

    Innovative methods for evaluating the geometric quality of gears in 3D optical metrology require a tailored gear alignment procedure to achieve accurate results. In this paper, a unique scan ... alignment technique called subsequent gear alignment (SGA) is proposed. It emphasises the correct alignment of the gear's hole and mimics how gears are aligned in practical applications. As a result, the SGA technique makes previously developed and published methods more usable. Scanned data was first subjected to both the SGA technique and commercial global alignment techniques before being analysed to obtain standardised geometric parameters. The SGA approach outperformed the global alignment method when these results were compared to those obtained using the tactile method.
