  • EHL for lubricated contacts of DLC [Elektronski vir] : role of interfacial and contact properties
    Polajnar, Marko ; Kalin, Mitjan
This paper presents how lubricated contacts can be tailored in terms of coefficient of friction reduction with tuning of interfacial and contact properties. Results show that %slip-inducing% DLC ... coatings enhance solidliquid slip and thus lower viscosity force within the contact that governs friction performance in EHL regime. With selection three different types of DLC coatings that provide different strength of solid-liquid interactions we show how these interactions influence on surface-oil interface in terms of solid-liquid slip. Namely, to enhance solid-liquid slip boundary conditions the important role plays lack of permanent polar interactions. In addition to DLC/DLC contacts where slip occurs on both surfaces, we investigate steel/DLC contacts with only one slipping surface as well. We show that an important role in tailoring coefficient of friction plays also the position of slipping solid-liquid interface within the contact. This is crucial in contacts that are not selfmated. Overview of results shows that optimal selection of DLC coating for certain contact conditions can lead to reduction in coefficient of friction for more than 40% compared to conventional steel/steel contact.
