  • Obvladovanje na meticilin odpornega Staphylococcus aureus-a (MRSA) v Splošni bolnišnici Maribor = Managing of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the General hospital Maribor
Kotnik-Kevorkijan, Božena ; Lorenčič Robnik, Slavica
In the last fifteen years methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was sporadically cultured from clinical material in Maribor General Hospital (MGH). However, from 1998 an increasing number of ... patients colonized and infected with methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were registrated. Moreover, in the year 1999 the first important MRSA outbreak occurred at MGH and the number of MRSA positive patients increased by mare than 60%. Therefore, in November 1999 the following additional infection control measures were introduced in order to prevent spreading of MRSA among hospitalized patients: (1) microbiologists inform about every new MRSA isolateboth the medical ward and members of Infection Control Team, and (2) a member of Infection Control Doctors Team or Infection Control Nurses Team visits each MRSA positive patient daily. Starting from year 2000, every new MRSA colonized patient in MGH should be de-colonized. As a result, further decrease in patients colonized or infected by MRSA was observed. Additional MRSA screening of high-risk patients (e.g. already hospitalized patients, patients from other Slovene hospitals, people from long-term care facilities and foreigners) has been applied. However, in intensive care units all patients are screened for MRSA. With these additional measures, MRSA spreadingin MGH was almost stopped. Some staff members colonized during the MRSA outbreak were successfully decolonized. Besides the above-mentioned measures, an obligatory infection control educational programme was also introduced. As a rule, every nurse and medical technician should attend four-hours education programme of infection control.
