  • Annual evaluation of TES with PCM for heating and cooling of buildings [Elektronski vir]

    In order to reduce energy consumption in buildings, a solution using PCMs as thermal energy storage is presented. During summer nights, cold is stored and delivered during the day to reduce cooling ... load, whereas in winter, heat from solar air collector is stored for heating during morning and evening hours. Proposed is a stand-alone unit suitable for offices, which consists of plates filled with paraffin RT22HC. Heat transfer from and into PCM is simulated with Ansys Fluent code for 2D geometry and results for melting or solidification are validated with experimental data. Besides that, also yearly operation analysis is carried out in order to determine energy savings of such a unit. Calculations reveal that in winter the largest savings are in March, in summer, the maximum amount of accumulated cold is in July and August, because of larger temperature fluctuations between day and night. Annual energy consumption in an office can be reduced for approximately 142 kWh.
