  • Slovenia and Europe - Slovenia in Europe : aspects of national and European identity = Slovenen en Europa - Slovenen in Europa : aspekten van nationale en Europese identiteit
Vauhnik, Jože, 1932- ; Seebauer, Renate
In the following article, firstly, an overview of the landscape as well as some facts and figures about the young republic of Slovenia will be given. The Slovenes, who for centunes have not had their ... own state nor their own nobility nor political power, could - after the forming of the nation was completed in the 19th century - protect their national identity above all through the language. It became the most important aspect of national identification. The Slovenes, with their language as the fundament, were in a position at the meeting point of three European cultural areas - to develop a complex culture, which can compare with any of the other European cultural nations. It is this culture - as Vauhnik concludes - that has to be cared for and preserved in a new enlarged Europe.
