  • Chitosan adsorption onto activated viscose fabrics
Peršin Fratnik, Zdenka ; Fras Zemljič, Lidija
Oxygen plasma treatment was applied in order to introduce additional carboxylic acidic groups as potential binding places for efficient chitosan adsorption. In this way electrostatic attraction was ... assured between cellulose fibres as host material, and chitosan as adsorbent. The hydrophilic/hydrophobic fibre characteristics were determined by the Powder contact angle method. The plasma efficiency regarding surface activation (introduction of -COOH) was analysed using conductometric titration. The same method was used for examining the adsorption of chitosan onto activated surfaces. Conductometric titration was compared with conventional Kjeldahl analysis. Finally, the antimicrobial properties of functionalised fibres were estimated. The plasma treatment yielded binding sites that resulted in an over a 20 % increase in the amount of chitosan adsorbed over that adsorbed on non-treated fabric. Chitosan-plasma-treated samples were more active as antimicrobial agents than those on non-treated surfaces.
