  • Efficient enhanced strain element formulation for 2D and 3D problems
Korelc, Jože, 1965- ; Wriggers, Peter
Further development of two and three dimensional low order elements based on a modified enchanced strain methodology is presented. The new formulation employs Taylor expansion of the isoparametric ... and enchanced shape functions derivatives in local coordinates. With this approach only nine enchanced modes are needed for a volumetric locking free 3D element. Furthermore, the formulation permits a symbolic integration of the element tangent matrix and a more efficient static condensation procedure due to uncoupling of the enchanced modes. Several numerical examples show that the element is stable, passes the patch test and yields good results especially in the highly distorted regime. Good results in analyzing thin shell structures with only one 3D element in thickness direction of the shell are also presented.
