  • Speiss from the late bronze age
    Paulin, Andrej ...
The findings from a metallographic study of a three thousand year old ingot from Slovenia are described. Optical and scanning electron miscrocopy with EDX and a semi-quantitative analysis revealed ... that the ingot is almost pure speiss (90 o/o). Two distinct phases are observable: a bright coarse dendritic phase consisting of Ni3Sb.CoAs, and slightly less bright eutectic with the composition of (Ni,Co)5As2.Cu3As. Next to speiss the ingon contained dark dendrites of a copper matte (10 o/o). The results of the solidification analysis show that the calculated proportions of the phases ang the overall composition agree with the chemical analysis. Spiess, despite appearing metallic, is brittle with a hardness equivalent to steel - useless for making object. This raises many questions about the role of this material in late bronze age metallurgy.
