  • Recognizing musical literacy in preschool children on the example of visual artistic expression of musical experiences
    Borota, Bogdana
In this article, we deal with music listening as a type of creative activity, which in school practice is associated with activities of expressing experiences, such as visual artistic expression. ... While doing so, we lean on the findings of the founders of the Reggio Emilia approach in that a child’s artistic achievements are an expression of how they experience and learn about music and are therefore treated as documentation material on music listening. Basically, it is a form of graphical “writing” on whatever the child wishes to communicate and present to others. Interpretation of the written record is done together with the child. The story that takes shape during this process may serve as a source of information about the child’s experiences, musical development, knowledge, and musical literacy. The study in which 125 children, aged 3-6, took part confirmed the hypothesis that children’s works of art after listening to music represent a suitable medium to recognize certain elements of musical literacy. Musical literacy is defined as a set of abilities, skills and knowledge that enables us to listen, experience, value, perform and create music. The stories narrated by the children adjacent to the medium (drawing) indicate their mood during listening, detection and distinction of musical elements, forms, and interpretative elements as well as other aspects of musical literacy. The findings of the study contribute to the understanding of children’s musical development and elements of musical literacy in the early period.
