  • Models for professional development of teachers
Gergely, Marianna ; Čotar Konrad, Sonja
The role of the teacher has changed dramatically within the last 20 years. A pre¬sent-day teacher faces rapid social and economic changes, which require him/her to constantly adapt, either in his/her ... approach or in the teaching method. Teacher's professional development is lifelong, starting with university studies and being enhanced by continuing professional development, which can be carried out alone or in teams with other colleagues, and is based on innovation, experimentation, reflection and self-evaluation. It is perceived as a process that takes place through specific phases or periods, each with its own characteristics and consequences that have an impact on the professional, personal and social development of a professional. Fuller, Zuzovsky, Berliner, Dreyfuss, Javrh and other researchers have explored and described the main features of professional periods. Their research shows that there are critical or sensitive points in a teacher's career that explain when teachers need support to participate in a relaxed, engaged and motivated manner in the upbringing and education of children. In this paper, we first describe the lifelong teacher education and the need for a teacher's professional development, and then present the phase models of various authors and establish the role/use thereof in the advancement and lifelong development of teachers.
