  • Migrations in history
    Klemenčič, Matjaž, 1955-
In this chapter the author presents a survey of the history of migrations from proto-history to the 21st century. Migrations are spatial movements of individuals or groups of people from emigrant ... (place being left) to immigrant (arrival) areas, with the intention of temporary or permanent settlement. Migrations represent demographic processes which mirror economic, political, ethnic, religious, cultural, existent, and social conditions in history. Due to many factors, the particular conditions that influence and stimulate or negatively influence movements, destinations, and volume of migrations are unpredictable. Therefore, history of migrations always represents also part of general history and should be understood in its framework. Migrations can be divided into temporary and permanent, according to the duration of settlement. When we talk about temporary settlements, we mean that the migrant leaves his/her territory of settlement with the intention to return in due time. In permanent migrations, the migrant leaves his/her territory of settlement with the intention of going somewhere else for good. According to the motive for emigration, one can classify migrations as voluntary or forced/involuntary. Some scholars emphasize that the terms "voluntary" and "forced" should be used with caution, since very few people migrate only because they wish to; and in quite a few forced migrarions, there is also a level of choice present. Homo migrans has existed ever since Homo sapiens came into existence. At the beginning of the 21st century, already every 35th person worldwide has participated in international migration. According to UN estimates, 175 million persons should be included as having participated in international migrations. We must remember that illegal migrants are not included in this number since we can not estimate their number. It is, however, very large.
