  • Analysis of late bronze age speiss
    Paulin, Andrej ...
In the late Bronze Age hoard (11th-10th Cent. B. C.) Kanalski Vrh, from western Slovenia (Southern Alpine region), there are many cast ingots chemically resembling spiess. A previous metallographic ... analysis of one ingot reveled a matrix consisting of speiss with a small amount of precipitated matte, suggesting that this was a product of the direct smelting of the ore, i.e., a primary speiss. The present investigation of three more ingot did not find any trace of matte, but in two ingot inclusions of metallic copper and oxides of copper, nickel, cobalt, antimony, arsenic and lead. Analysis suggest that these ingots are completely oxides speiss. The inclusions of metallic copper could not have been fromed during the spiess smelting, but can only be metallic inclusion in a slag. Actually, the completely oxides speiss represents a slag from the oxidic smelting a primary speiss. It seems that ancient smelters treated speiss as a "matte", perhaps smelting the speiss in an attempt to obtain more copper.
