  • Phase transitions induced by friction stir processing in a novel Al-alloy [Elektronski vir]
    Zupanič, Franc ...
In this work, an experimental Al-alloy containing 3.6 % Mn, 0.4 % Be and 3.5 % Cu was cast into a water-cooled mould. Plates with a thickness of 8 mm were friction stir processed (FSP) on one side. ... The processed area was investigated by light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with microchemical analysis (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indentation testing and X-ray diffraction. The as-cast microstructure consisted of large grains of aluminium solid solution, coarse orthorhombic Al6Mn (o-Al6Mn) and -Al2Cu in the interdendritic region. FSP caused considerable refinement of the initial grain structure via recrystallization in the stir zone. Large primary intermetallic particles were crashed and more uniformly distributed within the Al-rich matrix. The phase transition from the o-Al6Mn to 1-Al29Mn6Cu4 occurred in the stir zone. FSP increased the hardness of the alloy in the stir zone.
