  • Emergence of self-organized multivortex states inflocks of active rollers

    Active matter, both synthetic and biological, demonstrates com-plex spatiotemporal self-organization and the emergence of col-lective behavior. A coherent rotational motion, the vortex phase,is of ... great interest because of its ability to orchestrate well-organized motion of self-propelled particles over large distances.However, its generation without geometrical confinement hasbeen a challenge. Here, we show by experiments and computa-tional modeling that concentrated magnetic rollers self-organizeinto multivortex states in an unconfined environment. We findthat the neighboring vortices more likely occur with the oppositesense of rotation. Our studies provide insights into the mech-anism for the emergence of coherent collective motion on themacroscale from the coupling between microscale rotation andtranslation of individual active elements. These results may stim-ulate design strategies for self-assembled dynamic materials andmicrorobotics.
