  • Implantable stimulator for selective stimulation of the common peroneal nerve
    Rozman, Janez, 1956- ...
We present the modelling and design of an implantable system with monopolar half-cuff for selective stimulation of fibres within the superficial region ofthe human common peroneal nerve. A half-cuff ... electrode is capable of making a long term selective activation, mainly of those muscles that contribute to strong dorsal flexion and moderate eversion of the hemiplegic foot. One of themodelling objectives was to detemine the three dimensional spread of the electric field that would be generated by the half-cuff within the deep peroneal branch of the nerve by the half-cuff. Moreover, the extent of initialexcitation of the nerve fibres within the superficial region was predicted. For this purpose a total equivalent driving function at six positions within the half-cuff was calculated. The modelling objective was also to introduce a time delay between the cathodic and anodic parts of the stimulating pulse pair, mainly to predict eliciting more gradual recruitment of motor units.
