Cotič, Nastja ; Turk, Mojca, 1980- ; Zuljan, Darjo
In this paper, preschool teachers’ opinions on the use of tools in kindergarten were discussed. The study involved 100 preschool teachers from Slovenia. The data were collected with a questionnaire, ... covering several areas: type of tools the preschool teachers use together with children in kindergartens, the reasons for low use or non-use of tools and the curricular field of use of a certain tool. We also found differences between the tools they use and preparations for safe work, as well as differences between the preschool teacher's preparation for using a certain tool and taking into account child's characteristics (previous experience, motivation, knowledge…). The results showed that the preschool teachers mostly use scissors and a needle in their activities. A hammer, a saw and pliers are the tools rarely used. Respondents cite poor stocking of real tools in kindergartens and possible injuries to children that can occur when using real tools as the reasons for the low use and non-use of tools. Regardless of the tool they will use, the respondents always prepare to work safely with the tool, always taking into account children's developmental abilities, previous experience, and knowledge. They emphasise that working in small groups and the appropriate motivation of children are extremely important.
