  • Oblikovanje in razumevanje pojma javnost v slovenskem knjižnem jeziku
    Kalin Golob, Monika
In the article the author attempts to follow a development of the word 'public' (javnost) in Slovene language, from the second half of the 19th Century until the modern use of the word in social ... sciences. The word has been taken over from a Serbo-Croat language as a result of the need for abstract denomination, caused by intelectualization of life in the second half of the 19th Century (to which the developing Slovene language was forced to adapt). Until the end of the Second World War, the word was used above all in the 1. and the 2. dictionary meaning (1. members of a socio-political community, especially in relation to a certain event or matter; 2. public life, activity). Socio-political changes after the war increased a frequency of using the word, since the emphasis was on the public as an important factor of criticism and decision making process about social and political matters. However, a development in social sciences in the 1990s led to a change in grammatical use of the word - from uncountable to countable noun - the word can be thus used also in plural (profession uses the term in plural especially in the case of 'Public Relations' - 'stiki z javnostmi'). Communicology has posed a question about multiple (for terminological use not ideal) meaning of the word. One of the semantic dimenions was denoted as a 'public sphere', and there is also the term 'public opinion'. However, the profession faces difficulties with two other meanings of the term. Although it is not possible to confuse them in the text, communicology strives to find a new term for one of the meanings, because of the difficulties at translation from English language. Institution of terminological agreement gives a possibility for this.
