  • Machinability of stainless steel during turning with different cooling and lubrication systems : diploma thesis of the Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Studies programme
    Knežević, Borislav, inženir strojništva
The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of heat dissipation on the machinability of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel during the turning process. AISI 316L is known for its exceptional ... mechanical properties, including high tensile strength, chemical stability and corrosion resistance, so it's used in many industries from aerospace to medical. In this experimental research, CNMG12 04 12 MM 2025 insert is used in combination with SL-PC NL-40-12HP holder. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the quality of the machined surface, the forces generated during the machining process and the chip formation under three different machining conditions: dry machining, conventional cooling and using minimum quantity lubrication. (MQL) in combination with a cryogenic medium, liquid CO2. The experimental setup uses the ArcLub One system developed at the Laboratory of Machining, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana (LABOD). The mixture of MQL and liquid CO2 offers the advantage of minimising the use of cutting oil for lubrication, while focusing on the tribological aspects of this combination. In addition, the use of liquid CO2 allows efficient cooling of the cutting tool through direct conductive heat transfer, thanks to the exceptional specific heat capacity of CO2.By using identical machining parameters for all three machining conditions, this study aims to provide information on the optimal method for achieving high machinability of AISI 316L stainless steel.
