    Significantly higher productivity in fabrication of parts in small batch production is expected from higher flexibility and efficiency of CIM-Systems. Particular attention must be paid in this ... research to the tool system and the tool management. In the paper an overall toolmanagement system is presented. The system is on the global level defined as a cybernetic model which structurally represents tool management functions, their interrelated informational and material connections and interactions to the other productions activities. As kernel, the informational part of the system is recognized. It is implemented in the relational tool management database on which several procedures for support of tool management functions have been developed in order to obtain better control over the tools. This should resultin more efficient and reliable operating of the manufacturing system, aswell as in better tool utilization, reduction of tool diversity and redundancy and decrease of capital tied-in tools.
