  • Implementation of multivariate methods in the analysis of coated paper production data

    In this study two related multivariate techniques, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares (PLS) were used to analyze data collected from the coated paper production. Database ... consisting of 43 measured variables describing fibre composition, base paper properties, off-line coating and supercalendering parameters and final paper properties was transformed in order to to visualize intersample- and intervariable relationships. Additionally, variables behaving similarly were combined into new, latent variables (principal components), which enabled prediction of final paper characteristics based on these principal components as well as identification of those base paper properties and process parameters having the strongest influence on final paper quality, i.e. its optical and surface characteristics.
