  • Prehrana in okužbe = Nutrition and infections
    Kerin-Povšič, Milena
The lack of certain ingredients in nutrition affects the immune system of human organism, and thereby also the occurrence of infections. The immune system consists of complex mechanisms of humoral, ... cell, and unspecific immunity. A vital immunity site of human organism is intestinal barrier which prevents the translocation of bacteria into the peripheral blood circulation and further development of multiorgan failure (MOF). The influence of malnutrition on the immune system depends upon the grade and type of malnutrition (deficiency of proteins, vitamins, microelements...).Malnutritionis often associated with diseases and physical conditions the pathophysiological mechanism of which is systemic inflammatory response. These conditions are infections, operations, malignant diseases, andchronic inflammatory diseases that further impair the immune system. Therefore, adequate and proper nutrition of patients is of paramount importance. Some nutrition ingredients have immunmodulatory effect (omega-3 fatty acids, arginine, glutamine, nucleotides), technically termed as immunonutrition. It has been proved that immunonutrition can significantly reduce the number of treatment-related complications in certain groups of patients, in particular in the perioperative period.
