    The importance of dialects is sometimes remarked as part of national identity and, particularly, personal identity. Thus, personal identity can be especially well demonstrated by choosing dialectal ... language, regardless of the geographical distance from the relevant dialectal environment. This chapter deals with dialect use and dialect awareness observing a sample of high art school pupils, under a twofold approach. On the one hand, the dialect literacy of two different age groups is investigated, which is not a traditional approach in classic dialectology. In particular, one of these groups concerns adolescents aged from 15 to 18 years, usually not considered as dialectal informants. The decision to observe adolescents is motivated by some recent research showing that dialects are more and more perceived as a value, regardless of their rural or urban use. The survey is based on several audio and video recordings of pupils who use the same dialectal speech in order to communicate. This use has been observed in various official and unofficial, public and private speech situations. Their dialect is not only maintained, but also consciously used in speech situations where dialectal use is generally not expected. Such a use is not subject to linguistic unawareness. The second approach of this study aims at elucidating the mutual understanding of speakers of different dialects: it is investigated whether speakers of the different examined dialectal areas communicate with one another and manage to understand one another using their own dialects, or whether they are forced to use the standard language or any other way of expression. The findings of this study confirm the use of the dialect as an advantage that maintains or regains its value among young speakers.
