  • Examples of human disturbances in the Dinaric karst landscape since the early twentieth century : a case study of Bela krajina
Ribeiro, Daniela ; Simčič, Matej, geograf, 1982-
Human activities have been impacting karst environments for thousands of years, but as human pressure increased, so has the human disturbance of the karst landscapes. Karst landscapes are highly ... vulnerable due to the nature of their hydrological system, and once “damaged” can be extremely difficult to “repair.” The chapter gives an overview of the disturbance history in Bela Krajina. The management of litter-raking forests, the illegal deposition of waste condensers, the agricultural land improvement, and the use of fertilizers are among the greatest environmental pressures to which the Bela Krajina’s landscapes were subjected in the twentieth century. The greatest disturbances in this century were identified as the spreading of liquid manure on farmland and the leveling of dolines.
