  • Vector quantization with balanced codebook
    Imperl, Bojan
The paper presents a new method of generating the codebook for the use in the Vector Quantization process. Most of the codebooks used in vector quantizers is generated by the so called ... Linde-Buzo-Gray's algorithm (LBG-algorithm). Themain problem concerning this method is that a large set of prototypes must be provided for a successful completion of the codebook generation procedure. Providing such an amount of prototypes may sometimes be a difficult task therfore we have proposed a different algorithm for generating the codebook with low quantization distorsion. Initially, the method uniformly distributes the selected number of codevectors over the multidimensional vector space of prototypes. Codevectors are than adjusted in such manner to form the balanced codebook, where the distribution of the codevectors corresponds the distribution of the input vectors. Such procedure allows generation of a low distorsion codebook by using a set of input vectors, which is considerably smaller than the set, required for the generation of the same number of the codevectors using the Linde-Buzo-Gray's algorithm. Tests of the balanced codebook with the utterances of the 500 vowels of 50 speakers have shown lowerdispersion during the quantization process than with LBG codebook. The preliminary tests of the balanced codebook on a Discrete Observation HMM-recognizer has also shown some very positive characteristics especially inthe cases of the recognition tests with speakers that were not included in training set. Further tests are, however, necessary to provide more reliable results.
