    Fracture of the neck of the femur is a common injury of older people. Due to demographic trends in population and its medical and psychosocial consequencesit is becoming a serious social problem. ... Fracture of the neck of the femur is treated either conservatively or operatively. Operating methods are either conserving operations or endoprosthetic treatment. With conserving operations we use different methods. In my study I compared the results of different methods of conservingly treated fractures of the neck of the femur which are most commonly used at the Clinical department of traumatology of Clinical centre in Ljubljana. Two hundred patients were included in the study.They were all operated at the Clinical department of traumatology due to the fracture of the neck of the femur from 1993 to 1998. Personal data, data about injury, hospital treatment and rehabilitation were noted for each patient. Treatment with dynamic hip screw (DHS) proved to give the best results. The average age of the patients treated with DHS or three cancellous screws was 10 years less than that of patients treated with 130 degrees AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fuer Osteosyntesefragen) plate, regardless of the number of the screws used to fix the plate. The percentage of the patients with early(12%) or late (28%) complications was lowest with DHS, which also had thelowest percentage of revision operations (4%). The mobility of the patients, examined at the last control treatment, was also best with DHS treatment. Treatment with 130 degrees AO plate fixed with 4 screws had good results in older patients. Three cancellous screws treatment had good results in young and active patients. The results of conserving osteosinthetic treatment were worst with 130 degrees AO plate fixed with 1 screw. We concludethat our results of conservingly treated fractures of the neck of the femur are similar to those reported by other authors.
