  • X-ray microtomographic analysis of porous building materials [Elektronski vir] = Mikrotomografska analiza poroznih građevnih materijala s pomoću x-zraka

Recent innovations in the construction industry have led to the development of various types of porous building materials, which are formed by the addition of different foaming agents to waste ... material matrix. Within the present study, samples such as lightweight foamed aggregates (LWAs), alkali-activated foam (AAF) and autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) were selected for porosity determination by X-ray computed microtomography (micro CT). Such porous materials are produced with different foaming processes. During these processes, foaming agents release gasses and the resulting gasses remain trapped within the material structure. This study presents the results of the internal sample structure and porosity development of LWAs, AAF and AAC obtained by X-ray computed microtomography. The micro CT investigation gives results on overall porosity, as well as pore size distribution, connected pore space and volume of isolated pore space, depending on the elevated temperature and foaming process. Highly porous structures were obtained, with overall porosities ranges from 37.9 to 42.5% of LWAs, up to 54% for AAF and up to 77% for AAC. Finer pores occurred in the structure, whereas somewhat larger pores (some had diameters greater than 4 mm for AAC) also occurred. The results showed the usefulness of such technique for a wider range of various types of porous building materials with different pore ranges, especially those with larger pores with diameters greater than a few mm.
