    Red mud from the production of alumina is a promising material which can be used for the sustainable remediation of soil contaminated with potentially toxic elements. In the described study the use ... of red mud as an immobilisation additive for the preparation of a geotechnical composite from contaminated soil was investigated. Leaching tests and other basic geotechnical tests were performed in order to determine the red mud's immobilization potential. It was found that the potentially toxic elements had been efficiently adsorbed onto and encapsulated inside an optimal compacted matrix, with a low permeability to water. This means that the investigated red mud can be beneficially used for the rehabilitation of contaminated sites, for geotechnical embankments or as fill.
