  • Atomic hydrogen density along a continuously pumped glass tube
Mozetič, Miran, 1961- ; Drobnič, Matija
A low pressure weakly ionized inductively coupled RF hydrogen plasma with a density of ▫$10^{16}m^{-3}$▫ and an electron temperature of 5 eV was used as asource of neutral hydrogen atoms. The degree ... of dissociation of hydrogen molecules in the plasma was more than 50%. The mixture of molecular and atomic hydrogen was leaked into a cylindrical glass tube with an inner diameter of 36 mm and a length of 350 mm. On the opposite side, the tube was pumped by a rotary pump with a pumping speed of 2.2 ▫$dm^3 s^{-1}$▫. The density of hydrogen atoms along the tube was measured with a movable catalytic probe. Due to weak recombination of hydrogen atoms on the tube surface, the H density decreased along the tube. The measurements showed that the distribution of the H density along the tube was exponential with a characteristic depth of penetration of about 50 cm. The characteristic depth did not depend on the initial degree of dissociation of hydrogen molecules, but it depended slightly on the pressure in the range between 0.06 mbar and 2 mbar.
