  • Non-conventional methods of deep drawing of tailored blanks
Pepelnjak, Tomaž ; Kampuš, Zlatko ; Kuzman, Karl, 1941-2022
ǂThe ǂforming of tailored blanks from different materials and/or different sheet thicknesses is possible through the synergetic linkage of laser material treatment, welding and sheet metal forming. ... The use of specific tooling design - segmented blankholders - and optimised blankholder forces is necessary in these deep drawing processes. In special cases, the suggested guidelines for tooling and forming of tailored blanks can be neglected. The paper presents two non-conventional forming methods for tailored blanks of thin and thick sheet metal. The forming of tailored blanks from thin sheet metal in conventional tools with a non-segmented blankholder has been performed. The forming process without wrinkling is possible only under special conditions, in a so-called technological window limited by the drawing ratio and sheet thickness difference of the tailored blank. Deep drawing of tailored blanks from thick sheet steel used for the manufacturing of hollow products is another possibility of non-conventional production of tailored blanks. In this case parts have been produced without a blankholder and using a tractrix die profile.
